Hi, my name’s Matt. I’m a freelance commercial copywriter. I have a lovely and longsuffering wife and two terrific kids.
“Wait. Hold on,” you’re thinking. “Did you say you’re a copywriter? But, I thought…”
So, yeah, I guess technically I’m a writer already. But when people ask me, “So, what do you do?” and I say, “I’m a writer,” I want to be the kind of writer that immediately springs to mind when I give the answer, not the kind of writer that they kind of get after I explain it. They’re very different.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Freelance commercial writing is being pretty okay for me, and it’ll get better as I build the business.
“Build the business”? Um, well, yeah. I’m actually pretty new at the commercial copywriting thing, too. (I used to be a teacher, but that’s a whole other story.) Some day, when I’m more successful, I’ll go into more detail about how I became successful.
So, anyway. I’m an on-the-verge-of-success commercial copywriter who dreams of being a successful writer of bestselling works of fiction and nonfiction.
And I like RC cola. A lot. Too much, really.
I like Heroes. And I thought it was a real shame when Firefly got cancelled (that show deserved a better chance).
Finally, and more relevantly, my literary heroes are John Irving, Michael Chabon, and Neal Stephenson. Now those guys know how to tell a story!
